These definitions prepare you for the reading; you do not need to memorize them. The original record, dataset, law, study, statement, artifact, or direct evidence closest to the event or claim being examined.
Independent evidence that supports, qualifies, or contradicts a claim rather than merely repeating the same origin.
Information about an item’s origin, creation, custody, and transformations; it supports traceability but does not by itself prove accuracy.
A link can point to a real document yet fail to support the sentence attached to it. The document may report a different population, use an older version, quote another source, or present a forecast as one scenario. Open the source and find the specific evidence.
Authority is contextual. A regulator can be authoritative about its own guidance, a statistical office about its methods and data, and a company about its announced product terms. None automatically establishes independent performance, social effect, or the truth of every claim in its domain.
Generated text may cite journalism that cites a press release that summarizes a study. Each step can add interpretation. Follow the chain until you reach the evidence needed for the question, then inspect date, definitions, sample, geography, comparison, limitations, and incentives.
The nearest source is not always sufficient alone. A company release may be primary evidence that the company made a claim, while independent testing is needed to assess the capability. A law’s official text establishes wording; qualified interpretation may still be needed for application.
Provenance can show where a document came from, when it was created, and whether known transformations were recorded. This can help detect misattribution or unexplained editing. It cannot prove that the original creator was honest, informed, or correct.
Corroboration asks whether independent evidence converges. Independence matters: ten sites copying one post are one origin, not ten confirmations. A strong conclusion records both the chain of custody and the chain of support, including gaps and contradiction.

Source context
Supports provenance, content transparency, testing, incident awareness, and risk management for generated content; provenance metadata alone does not establish truth.
Demonstrates dated, method-dependent evidence synthesis; individual claims still require chapter, definition, geography, and methodology checks.
Provides policy, data, incident, and publication context across jurisdictions; it is not a primary source for every item it indexes.
