The Dartmouth proposal argued that aspects of learning and intelligence could, in principle, be described precisely enough for machines to simulate them. It helped consolidate a research identity, but relevant work in cybernetics, logic, computation, neuroscience and automation existed before and outside that meeting.
McCarthy favored declarative representations: stating facts and relations so that a system could reason about them. This agenda influenced expert systems, knowledge representation and later work on common sense, while other traditions emphasized perception, learning, embodiment or statistics.
