Hinton pursued connectionist models when much of AI favored other approaches. Improvements in algorithms, data, computing hardware and engineering later made deeper networks practically successful. No single researcher or idea explains that change.
In 2024 Hinton shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with John Hopfield for foundational discoveries and inventions enabling machine learning with artificial neural networks. He is University Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto and has also become a prominent public voice warning about advanced-AI risks.
