AI can expand options, reduce friction, and help inspect a problem. It cannot inherit your relationships, duties, values, or accountability merely because its response is fluent or convenient.

Before you begin
AI from Zero is useful preparation, but this path begins with familiar situations and does not require technical knowledge.
Do this now
Read the outcomes and useful terms before the first section.

Terms you will use
These definitions prepare you for the reading; you do not need to memorize them.Automation bias
A tendency to favor or follow an automated suggestion even when contrary evidence or context deserves attention.
Accountability
The obligation and practical ability to explain, own, correct, and answer for a decision or action.
Capability preservation
Designing tool use so people retain the knowledge, practice, access, and confidence needed to understand, decide, and recover.
01
Support can be separated from decision
An AI tool can generate options, organize notes, translate a draft, expose missing questions, simulate an objection, or suggest a structure. These are support roles. The final decision may require lived context, professional duty, consent, empathy, authority, or responsibility that the tool does not possess.
Name the boundary in advance. For example: the tool proposes wording, but I confirm every factual claim and decide what is sent; it groups expenses, but I classify ambiguous items and approve the submission. A visible division reduces accidental delegation.
02
Convenience can hide dependence
Repeatedly accepting outputs can weaken awareness of the source material, alternatives, and errors. If a person cannot explain the result, perform a critical step without the tool, or recognize a failure, review may become ceremonial rather than meaningful.
Preserve capability through explain-back, occasional unassisted practice, source access, correction logs, and fallback procedures. Use tools to create feedback and comparison, not only final answers. Accessibility support can strengthen agency; preservation does not mean refusing useful assistance.
03
Responsibility includes affected people
A decision may be convenient for the user while creating risk for another person whose data, opportunity, reputation, or work is involved. Ask who is represented in the context, who can challenge the result, and whose interests are absent.
For higher consequences, keep a named accountable person with adequate time, competence, information, and authority to stop. Record material use of AI where transparency is necessary, follow applicable rules, and provide correction or appeal rather than hiding behind the system.

Misconception to correct
“If a person clicks approve, human responsibility and oversight are automatically meaningful.”
Review requires time, information, competence, authority, and a real option to reject or change the result before consequence.
Active checks

A generated complaint letter contains allegations about another person. What makes human review meaningful?
Explain back and transfer
Write a responsibility rule
Choose one recurring AI use. Divide support from decision, identify affected people, define evidence and review, preserve capability, and name the fallback and accountable person.
Answer both checks before completing.
