Using a system to produce the required result while bypassing the reasoning, practice, or evidence the task was meant to develop.
A cycle of attempt, information about the attempt, revision, and another opportunity to demonstrate understanding.
An AI system acts like a tutor when it diagnoses an attempt, gives a bounded hint, asks the learner to explain, or creates another practice problem. It acts like a shortcut when it supplies a final response that the learner submits without being able to reconstruct or defend it.
Collaboration lies between those cases: a learner may brainstorm alternatives, challenge a draft, translate a difficult passage, or compare structures while retaining the central decisions. A product is not permanently a tutor or shortcut; the role changes with the request, task, timing, and learner action.
A useful sequence starts before AI: state the question, make an initial attempt, or predict the answer. After receiving help, close or set aside the output and reconstruct the idea in your own words, solve a related case, or explain which suggestion you rejected and why.
This sequence separates recognition from recall. A generated explanation can feel clear while it is visible, yet the learner may not be able to use the idea independently. A follow-up attempt provides better evidence of learning than agreement with a fluent answer.
AI output can be inaccurate, mismatched to a curriculum, overconfident, or insensitive to a learner’s context. Check important factual claims against course materials or authoritative sources, and treat high-stakes guidance about health, safety, rights, or personal welfare as requiring qualified human support.
Disclosure makes assistance discussable. A simple record can name the tool, the kind of help requested, what was retained or changed, and how the result was checked. The learner remains responsible for representing their own understanding honestly within the rules of the learning setting.

Human-centred, ethical, technical, application and creation competencies for school systems; it supports active and reflective AI literacy but is not a verdict on one classroom tool.
Teacher competencies spanning human-centred practice, ethics, foundations, pedagogy and professional learning; it is a framework rather than evidence that AI tutoring improves every learner or subject.
Evidence-informed guidance on retrieval, examples, practice and connecting representations; the guide predates current generative AI and must be applied thoughtfully rather than treated as an AI-product evaluation.
