Complementarity is role-specific
A nurse, teacher, mechanic, analyst, translator, and manager encounter different evidence, duties, tools, and people. Their useful combination of AI fluency and human capability cannot be reduced to prompting. Start from actual tasks and consequences.
Domain knowledge helps frame a problem, notice implausible output, handle exceptions, and communicate responsibly. If draft production becomes cheap, selecting, verifying, integrating, and explaining may become more important.

Practice judgment, not button memory
Product menus and model names change quickly. Durable skill includes defining purpose, selecting permitted context, comparing evidence, testing assumptions, setting permissions, designing review, and recovering from failure across tools.
Hands-on practice still matters. Use representative scenarios, explain-back, comparisons with and without assistance, error analysis, and transfer to a new case. A certificate or completed tutorial is not proof of reliable workplace use.

Preserve foundations and access
People need enough underlying knowledge to detect problems and learn when tools change. If AI always performs the practice task, novices may lose the repetitions needed to build a mental model. Alternate supported work with retrieval, source reading, feedback, and independent performance.
Skill development needs time, access, accessibility, psychological safety, and role-relevant support. Do not shift all responsibility onto workers while the organization withholds approved tools, policies, evidence, training, or a way to challenge harmful use.
