AI may replace a step, accelerate it, change how a person performs it, create new work, or do several at once. The useful question is how the work system changes and for whom.

Terms you will use
These definitions prepare you for the reading; you do not need to memorize them.Automation
A system performs a task or step with reduced direct human execution, within defined inputs, conditions, and controls.
Augmentation
A system supports a person who remains actively involved in understanding, deciding, producing, or acting.
Complementary work
Human or technical work required around an AI-supported step, such as preparation, review, exception handling, integration, explanation, and recovery.
01
Task change is a spectrum
A fixed extraction step may be mostly automated, while a writer uses suggestions as augmentation. A service representative may receive summaries that accelerate reading but also face changed performance targets. A new monitoring process may appear because the system exists.
Describe before and after: who does each step, with what input, time, discretion, evidence, and responsibility. The same tool can automate routine cases, augment difficult cases, and create review or recovery work.
02
Measure more than throughput
Faster output may matter, but so do correctness, consistency, usefulness, rework, waiting, user satisfaction, accessibility, privacy, safety, and the distribution of workload. Average results can hide severe failures for a subgroup or an overload of rare cases.
Measure the full cycle, including preparation, checking, correction, escalation, documentation, and downstream consequences. Compare to a credible baseline and record whether changed targets consume the time that was supposedly saved.
03
Augmentation can expand or reduce agency
A tool may help a novice see alternatives, translate language, or access specialist structure. It may also narrow choices, standardize voice, intensify pace, or make workers follow suggestions they cannot challenge.
Ask whether people can understand the recommendation, edit it, refuse it, learn from it, and obtain support. Evaluate different workers and users separately; a redesign that benefits experienced staff may burden newcomers, contractors, disabled users, or those working in less-supported languages.
Interactive model
Five forms of task change
Selected layerReplace or accelerate
The system performs a step, or reduces the time while the step remains substantially similar.

Replace or accelerateThe system performs a step, or reduces the time while the step remains substantially similar.
AugmentA person uses suggestions, search, generation, translation, or analysis while remaining active.
TransformInputs, sequence, roles, quality expectations, or decision boundaries change materially.
Create and redistributeNew work appears, old work moves, and value, risk, autonomy, or workload shifts between people.
Misconception to correct
“Automation removes human work, while augmentation leaves work unchanged.”
Automation still requires design, exceptions, oversight, and recovery; augmentation can deeply transform skills, pace, responsibility, and organization.
Active checks
Decide, then compare the reasoning
No grade, score, or streak. Progress records completed learning objects, not your worth or ability.01
A transcription tool creates a draft, a worker corrects names and decisions, and meeting targets double. What changed?

Classify one task change
Compare a task before and after proposed AI use. Identify replacement, acceleration, augmentation, transformation, creation, complementary work, and effects on different people.
Answer both checks before completing.
