A robot combines mechanical structure, power, sensors, control software, and actuators; some robots use AI for perception, planning, learning, or interaction. Many industrial robots instead follow tightly programmed motions.

Example

A warehouse robot senses aisle markers, plans a route, carries shelves, stops near people, and reports faults to an operator.

Why it matters

Physical action introduces safety, timing, hardware wear, environmental uncertainty, and irreversible consequence beyond screen-based output. Testing and recovery must include the real environment.

Common misunderstanding

Misconception: every robot is AI and every AI is a robot. Correction: robotics and AI overlap, but either can exist without the other.
